Op woensdag 29 oktober 2025 mocht Mariaberg weer stemmen. De cijfers zijn helder - en tonen een ongemakkelijke tegenstelling. Zeg maar gerust hypocrisie. Lees de cijfers. Herken de feiten. In rijke, witte wijken stemt men overwegend voor inclusie en migratie. Zolang het maar niet in hún straat is. Het wordt telkens opnieuw op het bordje van wijken zoals Mariaberg geschoven. Laten we die oneerlijkheid anno 2025 benoemen zoals hij is: volledig onaanvaardbaar.
Mariaberg heeft twee stembureaus: de voormalige Sint Gondulphusschool (deelbuurt Blauwdorp) en Buurtcentrum Mariaberg aan de Anjelierenstraat. Dit zijn de cijfers van de afgelopen verkiezingen.

De paradox
In Sint Pieter stemmen veel mensen - op GroenLinks-PvdA en D66 - alsof ze houders zijn van universele waarden: inclusie, diversiteit en migratie vriendelijk beleid. In de praktijk betekent dat vaak: 'inclusie, maar niet hier'. Hun buurt blijft vrijwel homogeen, royaal, en beschermd tegen sociale woningbouw. Ze steunen inclusie in het algemeen - maar niet in hún straat. Tegelijkertijd levert dat beleid precies wél sociale en ruimtelijke druk op wijken als Mariaberg: hoge bevolkingsdichtheid, minder keuze, meer kwetsbaarheid.
Dat is geen incident; het is een patroon. Je stemgedrag in de stad als geheel zegt dat je vóór migratie en diversiteit bent, maar je woonkeuzes en buurtpolitiek zorgen ervoor dat die idealen niet in je eigen straat zichtbaar worden. Het is gemakkelijk idealistische progressieve standpunten te voeren aan de lobbytafel - en een stuk moeilijker om ze te laten gelden bij vergunningsprocedures voor betaalbare woningen voor je eigen achtertuin.
Een eenvoudige norm voor consequentie: wie publiekelijk pleit voor inclusie, draagt er ook lokaal aan bij. Niet symbolisch - geen enkele 'diverse professional' als anekdotische trofee - maar structureel: sociale huur, kleinschalige betaalbare woningen en beleid dat segregatie actief doorbreekt. Studies en patronen
Veel studies en lokale analyses tonen een patroon: bewoners van rijkere, overwegend witte wijken stemmen relatief vaak op partijen of politici die in het algemeen pro‑migratie en pro‑inclusie zijn, maar verzetten zich lokaal tegen betaalbare huisvesting of opvanglocaties in hun eigen buurt - het NIMBY‑effect.
Dat verzet leidt er vaak toe dat betaalbare woningen, sociale huur en opvang geconcentreerd raken in minder welvarende wijken, waardoor die buurten disproportioneel veel migranten en lagere inkomensgroepen huisvesten.
Mechanismen: hogere politieke invloed van welvarende bewoners, actief buurtprotest tegen bouwplannen, striktere lokale bestemmingsplannen en langere vergunningstrajecten in rijke wijken.
Dit blijkt uit veel casestudies (Nederland en internationaal), nieuwsartikelen en onderzoek naar woonsegregatie en lokaal politieke participatie.
De oplossing is geen ideologisch tovermiddel; hij is simpel en eerlijk:
Verspreid woningen zodanig dat niet één wijk het grootste deel van de betaalbare huisvesting draagt.
Stimuleer invoering van gemengde woonblokken bij uitbreidingsprojecten in welvarende buurten.
Eist politieke consistentie: wie voor inclusie stemt, ondersteunt lokaal ook de projecten die diversiteit daadwerkelijk mogelijk maken.
Conclusie
Politiek zonder ruimtelijke verantwoordelijkheid is woordenspel. Als inclusie een waarde is, moet die ook in bakstenen en bestemmingsplannen zichtbaar zijn - niet alleen in krantenkoppen of bij debatten. Mariaberg en Sint Pieter tonen dat precies aan: men kan in abstracto progressief stemmen en in concreto behoudzuchtig leven. Dat is geen nuance - dat is onoprechtheid.

The paradox
In Sint Pieter many people vote for GroenLinks–PvdA and D66 — parties that promote inclusion, diversity, and immigration‑friendly policies. In practice, though, that often means “inclusion — just not here.” Their neighborhood stays mostly homogeneous, spacious, and protected against social housing. They support inclusion in general, but not in their own street.

It’s easy to voice progressive values at a lobbying table; it’s much harder to back them when a zoning change or affordable housing project affects your backyard.
A simple rule of consistency
If you publicly call for inclusion, help make it happen in your own neighborhood. Not symbolically — not by pointing to a single “diverse professional” who happens to live nearby — but structurally: social housing, small‑scale affordable units, and policies that actively break up segregation. Many studies and local analyses show a pattern: residents of wealthier, predominantly white neighborhoods tend to vote for parties or politicians who are generally pro‑migration and pro‑inclusion, yet locally oppose affordable housing or shelter facilities in their own neighborhoods — the NIMBY effect.
That opposition often results in affordable housing, social rental units, and shelters becoming concentrated in less affluent neighborhoods, causing those areas to house a disproportionately large share of migrants and lower‑income groups.
Mechanisms: greater political influence of affluent residents, active neighborhood protests against development plans, stricter local zoning rules, and longer permitting processes in wealthy areas.

A practical, fair solution
Spread affordable housing so one neighborhood doesn’t bear most of the burden.

Conclusion
Politics without local housing responsibility is just talk. If inclusion is a value, it must show up in bricks and zoning plans — not only in headlines or debates. Mariaberg and Sint Pieter make that clear: people can vote progressive in the abstract and act conservative in practice. That’s not nuance — it’s hypocrisy.

Op donderdag 16 januari probeerden twee mannen een raam van een juwelier aan de Maastrichter Brugstraat in Maastricht te forceren. Heb jij informatie over dit incident? Toegangswegen centrum nabij Mariaberg voortaan fietsvriendelijke straten

Dit is het vierde jaar op rij dat je de kans krijgt om in gesprek te gaan met het stadsbestuur en medewerkers van de gemeente. Dit jaar gaan de stadsdeelregisseurs en betrokken wethouders met jou in gesprek over sociale thema’s in jouw wijk, zoals gezondheid, ontmoeting en voorzieningen.
Noteer alvast 26.11.2025: bezoek aan stadsdeel Maastricht-West. Locatie: wijkcentrum Daalhof (Atrium), Aureliushof 160. Deze bijeenkomst geldt voor de wijken Belfort · Brusselsepoort · Daalhof · Dousberg-Hazendans · Malberg · Mariaberg.

District visit
In the fall of 2025, the municipality of Maastricht will once again organize district visits. This marks the fourth consecutive year that you have the opportunity to engage in discussions with the city council and municipal staff. This year, the district coordinators and involved council members will talk with you about social issues in your neighborhood, such as health, community engagement, and local services.
Mark your calendar for November 26, 2025: visit to district Maastricht-West. Location: Daalhof Community Center (Atrium), Aureliushof 160. This meeting is relevant for the neighborhoods of Belfort, Brusselsepoort, Daalhof, Dousberg-Hazendans, Malberg, and Mariaberg.
