Bufferzone Natura-2000 gebieden goed nieuws voor inwoners Mariaberg

[Maastricht | 04 januari 2026] De gemeente Maastricht werkt samen met het waterschap en de provincie aan het ontwikkelen van bufferzones rondom belangrijke Natura 2000-gebieden. Denk aan de Sint-Pietersberg en het relateief nabij Mariaberg gelegen Jekerdal. In deze zones zal bemesting verboden zijn en het gebruik van chemische gewasbeschermingsmiddelen niet toegestaan. De voorgenomen maatregelen zijn een initiatief van de Partij voor de Dieren, die erop wijst dat deze middelen vaak worden toegepast nabij scholen en woonwijken.

Gezondheid en Veiligheid

De gemeente heeft moeite om te waarborgen dat kwetsbare inwoners, waaronder de bewoners van de dichtbevolkte wijk Mariaberg, niet worden blootgesteld aan schadelijke stoffen. De huidige situatie laat zien dat agrariërs hun gewasbeschermingsmiddelen legaal volgens de regelgeving van de Nederlandse Voedsel- en Warenautoriteit (NvwA) gebruiken. Gemeenten kunnen dit dus niet verbieden met het oog op de veiligheid van mens en dier in deze omgeving. De voorgenomen plannen voor de bufferzones zullen deel uitmaken van de omgevingsvisie die dit jaar door de gemeenteraad besproken zal worden. Dit biedt niet alleen voordelen voor het milieu, maar ook voor de gezondheid van de inwoners van omliggende wijken zoals Mariaberg.

Voordelen voor Mariaberg

Mariaberg, relatief dichtbij het Jekerdal, kan aanzienlijk profiteren van de nieuwe bufferzones. Chemische bestrijdingsmiddelen houden zich immers niet aan grenzen en worden via lucht, grond en (grond)water verspreid in wijde omgeving. Studies tonen aan dat inwoners van volksbuurten vaak hogere percentages hebben van chronische aandoeningen zoals hart- en vaatziekten, diabetes en mentale gezondheidsproblemen. Veelal zijn deze achterstanden te wijten aan een combinatie van sociaaleconomische factoren, beperkte toegang tot gezondheidszorg, en een ongezonde leefomgeving die weinig ruimte biedt voor sport en beweging.

Buffer zone Natura 2000 areas good news for Mariaberg residents
